What is Root Canal Therapy?
When a tooth has decay that has not been treated for a long period of time, the decay eventually breaks through the enamel and the dentin layers of the teeth to the center that has the pulp or the nerve. When the nerve of the tooth gets infected by bacteria, then root canal therapy is what is needed to remove infection.
What causes the nerve/pulp to get infected?
There are various reasons why a the nerve or the pulp of the tooth to get infected. Some of the most common causes are:
1. Deep decay
2. A cracked or fractured tooth
3. Trauma
When do I know I need a Root Canal Treatment?
As the decay progresses to the nerve, you may start noticing some sensitivity to cold and hot foods. However if it remains untreated, the sensitivity will soon turn into a throbbing pain and it hurts to bite down every single time. These are a few indications for a root canal treatment.
How many appointments does a root canal treatment require?
It usually requires anywhere from 1-3 visits.
How much does a root canal therapy cost?
The cost of the root canal treatment depends on factors such as (1) the affected tooth – front or the back tooth (2) the extent of damage to decay (3) any dental insurance coverage that you might have.
What is the recovery process after root canal therapy? Do I need to take time off?
Most of the time it is a very simple procedure. You should start feeling some relief immediately.
