Some of the most common questions about tooth extraction that we encounter everyday are answered here for you:
What is a dental tooth or teeth extraction? And when do I need a tooth extraction?
Tooth extraction is a dental procedure where a tooth is removed due to various reasons:
- Insufficient space for all teeth to erupt in your mouth
- Severely fractured tooth
- Decay too deep into the nerve (pulp) of the tooth.
- Periodontal (gum) disease causing severe bone loss and loose teeth.
What is our process and approach towards teeth extraction?
Before a tooth extraction is done, Dr. Gutti will fully assess your medical and dental history and take appropriate X-rays to see the entire root and the surrounding bone and other necessary anatomy. Once the assessment for extraction is finished, the area around the tooth is numbed. Then the tooth is loosened gently and removed with a dental forceps.
What precautions do I need to take after a dental emergency tooth extraction?
After the tooth is removed, there are certain restrictions that you need to follow for speedy recovery and healing which can take approximately 7-10 days. Some of the care instructions after extraction are:
- Avoid Smoking or drinking through a straw for atleast 2-3 days after the extraction.
- Avoid rinsing mouth for the first 24 hours after extraction.
- Avoid hot and spicy food, hard or crunchy food, carbonated beverages;
- Eating a soft or liquid diet and chewing with teeth farther away from the extraction site.
- Brushing and flossing your other teeth as usual but avoiding the extraction site.
What is the price, how much dental tooth extraction cost?
The cost of an extraction usually depends on the difficulty of the tooth removal. Tooth extraction starts at $110. Teeth extractions are usually covered by your dental insurance company between 80% – 100%. However if you don’t have any dental benefits, we do offer a in-house discount dental plan just for you.
I have an existing partial denture. Can you repair or replace my missing tooth after extraction?
Usually, we will be able to make repairs to your existing partial denture without any difficulty. However there are instances, when the existing partial denture is either too old or too compromised to be able to make any changes.
How much pain will I be in after a tooth extraction?
If you have had an achy, bothersome tooth for a long time, then you should start feeling some relief immediately. However the recovery greatly depends on how closely you follow the after-care instructions and your smoking habits ( if any). Dr. Gutti makes sure that you are comfortable during the procedure at the office. She also makes time to call you in the evening to check and make sure that you are feeling better.
